Haida Gwaii
Haida Gwaii is an archipelago off British Columbia’s west coast, in Canada. Wildlife-rich Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site includes remote islands and temperate rainforest. Centuries-old totem poles stand in the remains of the Haida Nation village known as SGang Gwaay. From fossil records, we know the Haida were present at least 7,000 years ago, and probably earlier as the Pleistocene glaciers were retreating by then.

Approaching Entrance To Sheltered Cove -Sgang Gwaay (Low Tide)
Even though SGang Gwaay was the most remote of the Haida villages, the Kunghit Haida of SGang Gwaay did not escape the onslaught of Europeans. The devastating impact of smallpox and other diseases wiped out more than two-thirds of the Haida and led to the abandonment of SGang Gwaay around 1875.
